Gundersen Health System Ambulance (GHSA) is seeking casual/on-call EMTs to join our highly committed and driven West Union ambulance team as we provide the most advanced pre-hospital patient care available to an area of nearly 1,000 square miles covering parts of both Iowa and Wisconsin. With a dedicated staff of highly skilled Paramedics and experienced EMTs, we are able to provide emergency response and interfacility medical services 24 hours a day.

What You Will Do?

As an EMT, you will respond, treat, and transport patients in emergency and non-emergency settings. You will function as a crew member of an ambulance in both rural 911 and interfacility transfer environments. You will perform EMT-level clinical care under the guidelines of Gundersen Health System medical direction.

What's Available:

  • Casual/On-Call (non-benefit eligible position)

  • 24/48 Work Schedule: Work a 24-hour shift, have 48 hours off

  • Must work a minimum of 24 hours of open shifts per month

  • After New Employee Orientation, will orientate top the bay and rigs at site specific location and will be schedule 10 12hr ride along shifts with a Field Training Officer

  • Will provide internal training for Incident Command System & Certified Emergency Vehicle Operation (CEVO)

What You'll Need:

  • High School Diploma or equivalency

  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (NREMT)

  • Iowa Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)

  • Valid driver's license

  • Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (with hands-on learning)

  • Prior work experience in an emergency or pre-hospital setting is strongly preferred

Job Description:

Responds, treats, and transports patients in emergency and non-emergency settings. Functions as a crew member of an ambulance in both the 911 and the interfacility transfer environments. Performs EMT level clinical care under the guidelines of Gundersen Health System medical direction.

Major Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrate the skills and knowledge of an EMT per the standards set forth by the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety and Administration, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Iowa Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services, the Minnesota Emergency Medical Service Regulatory Board, the National Registry of EMTs, and the EMS Medical Director.
2. Demonstrate the ability to render competent and clinically proficient patient care.
3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and compliance with, all protocols for medical care per Gundersen Health System Ambulance policies and local Medical Control.
4. Demonstrate the attitude of a Health Care Professional to include, but not be limited to maintaining a clean appearance; demonstrating courteous, professional and ethical behavior; and demonstrating the ability to work cooperatively with other members of the EMS Health Care System.
5. Demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to inspect, safely operate, and maintain an emergency vehicle, including possession of a current and valid driver's license, and demonstrate knowledge and compliance with all State laws pertaining to the safe operation of an emergency vehicle.
6. Demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to inspect, safely operate, and maintain all equipment and tools relevant to an EMT.
7. Demonstrate ability to function in an extended shift (24 hours or greater) environment and be able to constructively utilize down-time between responses or transfers.
8. Demonstrate willingness to follow safety and fatigue guidelines including reporting of fatigue as outlined in policy.
9. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and compliance with, Gundersen Health System Ambulance and local communications policies and procedures.
10. Demonstrate the ability to communicate patient information to other members of the health care profession.
11. Demonstrate the ability to communicate information through the proper chain of command, to the management and other employees of Gundersen Health System Ambulance.
12. Demonstrate knowledge and compliance with local, state and regional emergency medical dispatching system operations.
13. Demonstrate the ability to accurately and completely document information required by Gundersen Health System Ambulance, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Iowa Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services, the Minnesota Emergency Medical Service Regulatory Board, and local Medical Control.
14. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and compliance with, all Gundersen Health System Ambulance policies and procedures.
15. Demonstrate a sincere desire to continually improve and upgrade the skills and knowledge of the emergency medical profession.
16. Demonstrate the ability to document and maintain a record of all continuing education credit hours on the form(s) specified by Gundersen Health System Ambulance, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Iowa Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services, the Minnesota Emergency Medical Service Regulatory Board, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and local medical control.
17. Assures vehicles and stations are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion.
18. Performs additional tasks as assigned by Gundersen Health System Ambulance Lead Paramedics and management.

Education and Learning:

ICS 100, 200 and 700 course certificates required within 60 days of hire

  • Must have an EMT license in either Iowa or Wisconsin to begin employment, with EMT licenses in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota all required within 90 days of the hire date
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (NREMT)
  • Valid Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa driver's license
  • Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (with hands on learning) from one of the following programs; American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Certified Emergency Vehicle Operation (CEVO) or equivalent within 60 days of hire date
