Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates with people leader to execute company underwriting framework within Retail & Services business segment.

  • Lead research, coordinate strategy, administer and develop products and programs at enterprise level.

  • Create and communicate best practices and underwriting guidance within the Retail & Service business segment.

  • Serve as a technical expert in Retail & Service business segment, offering guidance on underwriting issues and strategy.

  • Evaluate complex underwriting risks and provide analysis and guidance to underwriting team in determining acceptability of business.

  • Provide guidance and/or approve accounts above branch underwriting authority.

  • Act as a strategic partner for other corporate departments

  • Analyze premium, loss data and other key reports on monthly and quarterly basis to ensure long-term profitable growth.

  • Review underwriting & loss results to identify underlying trends impacting results and make recommendations to people leader on potential actions.

  • Proactively communicate and make necessary recommendations to people leader for improvements needed to meet company goals and improve underwriting results.

  • Recommend & develop new product ideas for the Retail & Services business segment.

  • Participate in special projects with other strategic partners within the organization as a representative of the Retail & Services business segment.

  • Partners with people leader to perform the cost and benefit of market opportunities and product initiatives.

  • Provides analysis and research to people leader in development of short-term and long-term strategies in support of enterprise wise business and profitability goals

  • Reviews insurance publications and keeps current on issues by attending seminars and participating in formalized continuing education

  • Represents Corporate Underwriting and EMC on various committees and events as appropriate and approved

  • Maintains expert knowledge including state regulations, coverages, operational processes, underwriting criteria and system application and tools.

  • Prepares and teaches underwriting workshops and seminars for underwriting team

  • Assists in training staff and prepares articles, segment-specific position papers and underwriting bulletins

Education & Experience:

The education and experience below are required for the job unless labelled as preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in an insurance or business-related field, or equivalent relevant experience

  • Eight years of experience with commercial property and casualty underwriting experience

  • Staff underwriting experience within assigned line of business or business segment preferre

  • Insurance certifications, such as CPCU, AU or CIC

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The knowledge, skills and abilities below are required for the job unless labelled as preferred:

  • Excellent knowledge of countrywide underwriting techniques, terminology, policies, and forms

  • Strong underwriting judgment and decision-making skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak effectively before groups

  • Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently and possess demonstrated problem-solving abilities

  • Good computer knowledge, Internet and keyboarding skills

  • Occasional travel; a valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving
