About PiTech:

The Public Interest Tech Initiative at Cornell Tech (PiTech) is committed to fostering the next generation of innovators, leaders, and researchers shaping technology to achieve positive societal outcomes. We are seeking an Associate Director to manage and grow PiTech's diverse programs and partnerships.


Position Summary:

The Associate Director will collaborate with the Associate Dean for Impact and PiTech Faculty Director, Deborah Estrin, and other key personnel; focusing on program implementation, and external engagement. Activities and responsibilities will adapt over time.


This is a full-time, benefits-eligible staff position for an initial term of 3 years with possibility of extension. The work location is the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City. The Associate Director is expected to engage with in-person activities on campus and in the New York City area.

Position Responsibilities


In collaboration with the Faculty Director, manage the Initiative's programs, activities, and internal coordination. -35%

  • Oversee implementation of PiTech programs; develop program materials.
  • Review and evaluate program outcomes and assess deliverance of program objectives; review and analyze program data to determine the effectiveness of existing programs and what adjustments to make; report on program accomplishments.
  • Develop, manage and monitor the program budget; ensure that the program meets all grant obligations and reporting duties by established deadlines.
  • Participate in strategic and operational planning, and make recommendations for programs.

In collaboration with the Faculty Director, manage the Initiative's programmatic collaborations, relationships and communications with external partners; particularly with respect to PhD Impact Fellows, Impact Studio, and Faculty-led AI Clinic. -35%

  • Build partnerships and maintain effective relationships with public interest organizations outside of Cornell University.
  • Lead scoping of projects with external partners for all PiTech programs.
  • Develop all communications and outreach materials; provide input and assist in developing outreach strategies.

Develop, organize, and produce events to grow a vibrant PiTech community with on campus and external stakeholders. -10%

  • Plan events and oversee implementation of all event logistics.
  • Serve as a resource for student groups in organization of PiTech-adjacent events on campus.

Participate in development of grant proposals and reports to funders and donors who support the initiative. -10%

  • Prepare reports to existing funders;
  • Assist with background research on funding prospects identified by leadership and development, and with grant proposal preparation.

Represent PiTech in a variety of internal settings. Maintain relationships with other Cornell Tech and Cornell University offices, including HR, Finance, External Relations, Legal, Events, Development, and other administrative areas. -10%

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with other departments, student/academic services, and individuals and offices inside the broader Cornell University.
  • Participate in projects with occasional work responsibility falling above or below current classification.

Required Qualification:

  • Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience, including in the application of digital technologies (information science, information systems, economics, public policy, business, etc.).
  • Track record of working with public interest and/or public sector organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications and presentation skills; experience managing relationships with external partners and other stakeholders.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills; proactive approach to work responsibilities.
  • Project management expertise, including proficient use of modern productivity tools.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
