Job Description Summary:The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (the National Academies) work together to advance the frontiers of science, foster evidence-based government decision making and public policy, improve public understanding, and promote the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge on a range of scientific and engineering issues.

As a private, non-profit institution, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) holds a Congressional charter to serve as the nation's premier source of independent, objective, and expert advice on some of the most pressing challenges facing the nation and the world. Operating under that charter, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) consist of members elected by peers in recognition of distinguished achievement in their respective fields. Academy members are among the world's most distinguished scientists, engineers, physicians, and researchers, including more than 300 Nobel laureates. Together, and through the volunteer service of thousands of experts, the National Academies provide their advice through the National Research Council (NRC).

The National Academies locations:
*The Keck Center at 500 Fifth St., NW in Washington, D.C. An 11 story 581,000 square foot building. Opened in 2002, it houses about 1,000 employees and is location where most of NASEM's convening activities and meetings are held.
*The National Academy of Sciences Building at 2101 Constitution Ave., NW in Washington, D.C. This historic building hosts various symposia, lectures, and cultural events and art exhibits that are open to the public. This is a 174, 000 square foot building.
*The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center at 100 Academy in Irvine, California (jointly owned with National Academy of Engineering Foundation and through The National Academy Corporation). The Beckman Center is 50,000 square feet.
*NASEM leases a facility in Vienna, Virginia - the 14,000 square foot the National Academies Data Center.

Position Summary:
The Senior Director, Facilities Management (SDFM) is the leader of the Office of Administration and reports to the Chief Human Resources Officer. They direct and manage the daily operations for facilities management and administrative services across a broad range of disciplines, including health and safety, building security, grounds, custodial, parking and garage, conference center management, audiovisual equipment and support, events and meetings, food services, shipping and receiving, reprographics, energy and environmental management, and office space leasing. They develop and implement all aspects of improvement efforts in facility maintenance, energy/ infrastructure reduction programs, site security and safety, environmental stewardship and compliance, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance to ensure a safe and secure working environment and protect the organization's staff, property, and assets.

The Senior Director serves as a liaison with local, state, and federal agencies on all matters pertaining to facilities. They ensure that the National Academies' facilities and services provide an excellent work environment that efficiently meet the needs of staff, members, and visitors.

Job Description:

Near-Term Objectives:

  • Accommodate the changing office space needs. Complete the transformation of the organization's space utilization from one that is predominately based on in-person work/ meetings to blended model of virtual and in-person.

  • Partner with appropriate NASEM senior leadership and outside counsel on all matters related to facilities compliance for DC bonds.

  • Lead efforts to ensure that building security keeps pace with the increased classified security protocols.

  • Implement building facility improvements to comply with DC decarbonization and environmental requirements.

  • Foster an atmosphere of service excellence, teamwork and collaboration in all aspects of facilities management and administrative services for NASEM.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • A minimum of 10 years of responsibility at a management level in areas of facilities management.

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent formal education) in Engineering, Property Management, or related fields.

  • Security clearance or ability to obtain one is required. Experience working with classified facilities and SCIF management experience preferred.

  • Certified Facility Manager (CFM), Sustainability Facility Professional (SFP) and Professional Engineer (PE) are highly preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of property management and building maintenance practices; knowledge of the Washington, DC real estate market, industry analysis and best practices.

  • Knowledge and understanding of managing historic property in Washington, DC, with significant zoning constraints.

  • Solid knowledge and ability to forecast capital improvements and complete other analyses to support decision-making. Operations Research background a plus.

  • Ability to operate independently and complete critical projects on time, on budget, and within scope.

  • Strong Audio-Visual experience, particularly around hybrid meetings.

  • Experience with space management activities, optimization modeling, modernization of space, and space forecasting required; office space leasing desired.

  • Experience facilitating high-profile events; managing food and beverage services.

  • Experience working with federal regulations and other regulatory compliance issues.

  • Background writing and enforcing policy and procedures.

  • Knowledge and experience with insurance claims.

  • Excellent demonstrated performance in preparing and managing Facilities budget and forecasting long-range needs.

  • Health and Safety focus, with experience in crisis management.

  • Experience with environmental stewardship and compliance, including sustainability and energy/infrastructure analysis and reduction programs.

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and presentation skills, with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain diverse, effective teams.

  • Proficiency in Computerized Maintenance Management Software, Microsoft Excel, Word, Microsoft 365/TEAMS.

  • This position is expected to be 100% on-site, working between each property. Coverage to manage teams at major events is expected. Ability to meet travel requirements.

Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $152,940 - $267,650. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range.

Work Environment:Office environment, with travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
