WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Medical Officer will oversee the development and implementation of all medical policies and procedures of the assigned division and blood regions. Interact with hospital customers and coordinate communication among the blood services regions and the local and national medical community. Provide accurate and timely medical and technical consultation in transfusion medicine to all operational areas of the division and to its customers. Promote the image of the Red Cross in the medical community by serving on transfusion committees, medical and technical advisory committees and external committees of AABB, CAP, ASFA, and other professional organizations. Perform all duties and medical responsibilities in compliance with Red Cross standard operating procedures, federal regulations (i.e., CFR, OSHA, CLIA), state and local regulations, and the consent decree. Provide support, development and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers.

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE GOOD

1. Manage Medical Directors including, but not limited to hiring, training, coaching, evaluating and disciplining to form a coherent and skilled field medical team and enhance the operational success of the Red Cross.
2. Arrange for adequate coverage of all medical functions in the division and facilitate cross-coverage agreements among Medical Directors. Ensure sound medical decisions across the division in cooperation with BHQ Medical Office to ensure a consistent approach in blood center activities in the division.
3. Serve with division leadership and provide guidance to senior management teams. May also serve as the designee for the Chief Executive Officer. Medical Consultant in Transfusion Service, Patient Services, Patient Blood Management. Provide medical consultation in transfusion medicine, blood banking and patient services to hospital customers.

4. Organize and participate in regional Medical and Technical Advisory Committees or equivalent programs for hospital customers. Provide continuing medical education to external customers and internal audiences.
5. Promote the safe and effective use of blood components through interactions with hospital customers, and participation on transfusion committees and professional organization committees (i.e., AABB, CAP).
6. Direct patient service programs including but not limited to therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collection and processing, perioperative autologous cell salvage, and patient blood management as needed. Medical Oversight of Blood Center Operations and Regulated Activities
7. Direct the medical aspects of regulated blood center operations including collections, donor management, recipient & donor adverse reactions, suspect product investigations and other operational systems. Participate in the development of national procedures, policies or position statements on medical criteria for donor eligibility and safety, component quality, and transfusion practice. Investigate concerns and complaints related to donor complications, customer service, or hospital relationships including notification of Executive Leadership, as necessary; plan and implement appropriate corrective actions. Serve as CLIA Laboratory Director for regulated collection activities in assigned regions, immunohematology laboratories, HLA laboratories, stem cell collection and processing, and/or national testing laboratories.


100% Remote- Candidates can live anywhere in the eastern US

The salary range for this position is $190,000 - $230,000

Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Education: M.D. or D.O. degree with post-graduate training/specialization in blood banking/transfusion medicine is required. Board certified or eligible in internal medicine, pediatrics or clinical pathology. Board certified or eligible in blood banking/transfusion medicine or equivalent is highly desirable. Must be licensed in the state of the primary site of the assigned regions and other states served by the regions and/or division, as needed. Must obtain and maintain professional credentials in medicine, including but not limited to state medical licensure, laboratory director certification and specialty boards. DEA certification may be required.
Experience: 10 years of experience in blood banking/transfusion medicine, or related field. Experience in blood center operations with increasing levels of responsibility is highly desirable. Experience in relevant medical/scientific research and scholarly activities sufficient to warrant academic appointment is highly desirable. Management Experience: 7 years of management experience required.

Skills & Abilities: Extensive knowledge of current/projected trends in transfusion medicine/blood banking and hospital health care and knowledge of medical/technical principles of blood center operations is required.
Customer Focus, teamwork and collaboration ensure customer satisfaction and maximize internal/external relationships. Effective presentation skills with a variety of internal/external individuals and groups. Possesses active and attentive listening. Makes good decisions based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgement. Ability to effectively set priorities and apply sound judgement to accomplish goals. Ability to work on a team.

WHAT WILL GIVE YOU THE COMPETITIVE EDGE

Experience in Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking services, Apheresis services, CLIA Lab, or Stem Cell collection and/or Stem Cell processing.

Location: ( regular travel & remote)

Travel: Regular Travel to south-eastern states (Georgia) will be required.

*Combination of candidate's education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description's minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The work environment will consist of moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phones and printers, light traffic). The employee must have the ability to work in a small cubicle and have the ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
