Hourly wage for this position starts at $25.50 per hour up to $35.50 per hour depending on experience.

Responsibilities

Wastewater Operator responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate stationary mechanical and electrical equipment, including pumps, chemical feeders, valves compressors, conveyors, clarifiers, control panels, engine generators, digester heat exchangers, electrical switch gears and computers

  • Apply knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and equipment to perform all regular and non-routine wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance

  • Perform all activities necessary to maintain structures, equipment, and grounds

  • Monitor all plant operations and record data from control room meters, gauges, and recording chart readings

  • Report malfunctions and unusual trends or conditions to supervisor

  • Adjust apparatus controls, start and stop pumps, adjust valves, and operate electric switches and valve controls as necessary to maintain assigned process operations within prescribed standards

  • As assigned, clean sludge and grit from basins, weirs, baffles using tools such as high-pressure washers, water hoses, and brushes

  • Perform all routine maintenance on equipment, such as lubrication, oil changes, and belt changes

  • Perform routine repair work, such as disassembly, repair, and installation of ball valves, switches, minor process instrumentation, and related equipment

  • Perform all work in accordance with local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations and in compliance with all departmental safety policies and procedures. This includes using appropriate safety devices and equipment.

  • Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.

  • Other duties as assigned

This is a safety sensitive position. This is an on-site position.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates for Wastewater Operator should possess the following:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain KDHE Certification for Wastewater operator license

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the processes, techniques and methods involved in wastewater treatment

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the chemicals used in wastewater treatment

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the functions and operating principles of mechanical equipment such as filters, pumps, motors, mixers and other equipment used in a water or wastewater treatment plant

  • Ability to analyze and diagnose problems and react promptly and efficiently to resolve problem in emergency situations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent walking and standing
  • Frequent lifting up to 60 pounds
  • Occasional carrying up to 60 pounds
  • Occasional pushing and pulling up to 60 pounds
  • Frequent balancing, bending, handling, feeling, climbing, talking, smelling and twisting
  • Occasional reaching, kneeling and crawling
  • Vision, speech and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks
