Overview

Under the general direction of the Trauma Program Manager, this position assists in overseeing trauma care quality and efficient coordination of patient care from pre-hospital to rehabilitation. This position requires knowledge and skill in professional nursing theory and practice, trauma care and trauma systems, principles of teaching, learning and quality improvement. This position will play an active role in the hospitals ACS verification and state designation as a Level I adult trauma center and Level II pediatric trauma center.

Responsibilities

Key Accountability: Quality Initiatives

* Assists in coordinating the continuum of trauma care, which includes the planning and implementation of protocols and practice management guidelines, monitoring care of in-hospital patients and serving as a resource for clinical practice.

* Assists in monitoring compliance with trauma guidelines.

* Assists in linking performance improvement data to educational programs and outreach.

* Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

* Acts as a consultant and educator in program development and special projects.

* Facilitates and assists in implementing evidence based practice strategies to meet the patient care needs. Assists in the achievement of quality improvement objectives and takes necessary modifications for attainment of goals.

* Assists the TPM in coordination, investigation, analysis and response to quality/patient safety issues, events, significant care issues and trends. Assists the TPM and Quality Department in assessing root cause analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, and process improvement, working with multidisciplinary teams.

* Works with Data Analyst and Trauma Program Manager in developing and analyzing data for administrative and clinical decision making, as well as regulatory requirements. Assists in coordinating implementation of data collection processes: providing analysis, summary, research and benchmarking (such as TQIP and Pediatric TQIP).

* Serves as a resource to facilitate task forces to plan, implement and coordinate facility activities to maximize service quality, effectiveness and efficiency.

* Assists the TPM in collaborating with key stakeholders to evaluate, plan and implement process improvements and patient safety programs across the facility and/or the organization.

* Assists with ensuring necessary screenings and interventions are completed on trauma patients

* Assists in identifying complications, comorbidities, and monitors compliance with trauma guidelines.

Key Accountability: Education responsibilities

* Assists the TPM with intra-facility and regional professional staff development, participates in community trauma education and prevention activities.

* Assists in teaching TNCC Courses

* Participates in professional organizations and community related projects for personal and professional growth.

* Serves as mentor to other nurses in the care of injured patients.

* Assists in orienting surgery residents to trauma services and practice management guidelines.

Key Accountability: Trauma Registry/Data Management

* Assists staff in collection, coding, scoring and the validation process.

* Assures the registry is designed to facilitate performance improvement activities, trend reports and research while protecting confidentiality.

* Assists with' consistency and accuracy of trauma data

* Completes quarterly and annual security audits of Trauma One

* Maintains awareness of applicable laws and/or regulations affecting patient care. Remains current on law/regulation changes, recognizes implications to the organization and recommends courses of action to ensure compliance.

* Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.

* Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

* This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UPHDM Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.


Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree.

BSN or MSN

Experience:

Three years of emergency/critical care or relevant trauma nursing experience.

Experience in trauma nursing.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current Iowa license as a registered nurse.

Current BCLS (CPR)

TNCC Provider, TNCC Instructor

CEN, CCRN or TCRN

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to manage programs and projects.

Basic understanding of Word, Excel and Outlook

Knowledgeable about the Iowa Trauma System

Experience with Trauma Registry

Previous experience with EPIC

Other:

Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated Teamwork
