Polysomnography Technician

Waterloo, IA

Full-Time: 1900-0730; weekend rotation

Under the general supervision of the department manager provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and out of center testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education.

Responsibilities
  • Performs polysomnograms according to standards of department.
  • Administers oxygen (in accordance to physician orders) and/or nasal CPAP/BiPAP according to department procedure. Instructs patient on the proper use and care of the equipment.
  • Writes a comprehensive report on findings of the polysomnogram to include treatment levels (if used).
  • Maintains, cleans, calibrates, and troubleshoots the equipment to enhance the operation of each instrument.
  • Collects and/or reviews medical, historical, and medication information to perform the appropriate study prescribed by the physician.
  • Assumes responsibility for performing all types of Neurodiagnostic testing for adolescent, young/middle/mature adult patients and sleep disorder testing procedures for adolescent, young/middle/mature adult patients.
  • Evaluates patients' and significant others' educational needs and initiates and implements appropriate teaching or makes appropriate referrals.
  • Documents patient data thoroughly and accurately.
  • Communicates with other members of the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
  • Participates in unit operations demonstrating professional behaviors to include supporting goals of the unit and maintaining an awareness of resource utilization.
  • Participates in non-direct patient care activities including educational activities, quality improvement activities, standards development and review, hospital/unit committees and other related activities.

Qualifications
  • Associates degree in respiratory therapy, polysomnographic technology or electro neurodiagnostic technology.
  • Four months of experience preferred.
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist certification through National Board of Respiratory Care or other related Healthcare related field within 3 months of hire. OR Graduate of Respiratory Care or other related healthcare accredited program with Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS) credential eligible. Will have one year from date of hire or transfer date to become SDS credentialed.
  • Iowa Licensed by the Board of Respiratory Care and Polysomnography within 3 months of hire.
  • Board certified by Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists preferred.
  • Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, maintain good interpersonal relationships, adapt to change in a positive manner and think creatively.
  • Possesses integrity, initiative and flexibility. Completion of center orientation with related competencies completed.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to adolescent and adult patients.
  • Demonstrates competency in the following procedures: Polysomnography, baseline, split night and PAP titrations.
  • Has the basic knowledge of the following disorders but is not limited to, sleep apnea, hypopnea, respiratory effort related arousal, and sleep physiology examinations, narcolepsy, hypersomnolence, parasomnias, seizures, gastric reflux, continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure examinations, insomnia, hypersomnia, parasomnia versus apnea, seizures versus apnea, and documentation of events.
