The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is seeking two Athletic Training Residents interested in specialty training in Orthopedics.

Description:

The CAATE Accredited University of Iowa Athletic Training Residency Program is a 12-month formal educational program that offers structured curricula, including didactic and clinical components in the specialty area of orthopedics. The program builds upon the knowledge and experiences gained from professional entry level education and provides specialty training to advance the competency of athletic trainers and provide contemporary expertise for professional employment in the modern health care environment.

Program Mission:

The mission of the Athletic Training Residency Program is to produce athletic training clinicians with advanced orthopedic knowledge and skills in a manner that emphasizes professionalism, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and healthcare informatics, thus enabling them to provide patient-centered health care.

Position Responsibilities:

Athletic Training Residents are required to attend weekly didactic lectures, present evidence-based medicine lectures/case studies to faculty and staff, and complete weekly assignments (Deep dive questions, radiology lectures, personal development discussion and leadership discussions). Residents will be evaluated on rotation specific learning objectives and AT Milestones.

  • Perform initial patient assessment including medical history and physical examination
  • Present patient to supervising provider including history, physical exam, pertinent test results, and working diagnosis
  • Collaborate with attending provider to determine appropriate treatment plan, communicate with patient, and provide further home exercise/rehabilitation instruction as needed
  • Collaborate with attending provider to apply or remove splints/casts/braces and fit crutches; provide produce education
  • Remove sutures and provide appropriate wound care and dressing changes
  • Assist physician in procedures as needed including preparing medications and materials for pre- and post-injections and sutures, and preparation of patient treatment site
  • Document clinic patient visit according to documentation policies. Collect data and transcribe in the electronic medical record for LIP with appropriate cosign
  • Interact with orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine primary care physicians, orthopedic physician assistants and sports medicine physical therapists.
  • Assume a functional role in the orthopedic clinical setting and operating room, directly assisting in treating patients under the direction of the supervising physician.
  • Obtain appropriate medical history and execute appropriate physical examination on each patient seen.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and proper execution of sterile technique and sterile field in the operating room.
  • Assist with patient positioning, patient prepping, draping, retracting tissue, and prepared harvested grafts.
  • Actively participate in departmental research and or quality improvement projects

Percent of Time:100% for 12 months (July 2024-June 2025)

Salary:$35,000 per year

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree is required
  • BOC certification
  • Iowa Athletic Trainer License or Athletic Trainer License in state where the applicant currently resides; or license eligible (will be required to obtain State of Iowa Athletic Training License)
  • CPR/AED certification
  • NPI#
  • Ability to work within a medical team model and promote a positive attitude.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including proper use of medical terminology
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Knowledge and skills of obtaining, evaluating, and treating orthopedic conditions
  • Knowledge of common sports medicine and orthopedic surgical procedures
  • Knowledge of common post-operative rehabilitation programs
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Strong computer-related skills and experience using Microsoft Office
  • Ability to exercise independent initiative and judgement are required

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience using EPIC
  • 3-5 years of experience as an Athletic Trainer
