What You Can Expect

As our Water Treatment Specialist at the University of Iowa campus, you will be responsible for ensuring the daily route coverage to meet the high-quality water needs of our on-campus clients. Your duties include monitoring, operating, and maintaining water treatment systems to provide specialized finished water for various operational needs. The systems served encompass community water, high-quality water, pools and spas, and hot and cold building loops. Water Treatment methods that you will employ include water softening, filtration, reverse osmosis, deionization, distillation, and ultraviolet disinfection. You will also conduct flushing and disinfection as required for new construction piping and systems and perform sampling and chemical treatment to meet NPDES permit discharge requirements.

Your day starts with a morning meeting to discuss planned activities, review previous day's activities, and outline longer-term plans. Following this, you will commence your assigned route, which includes collecting samples, reading meters, and checking operating conditions of equipment such as pressures, water quality, and volumes. Duties also involve making chemical adjustments, logging samples and operational checks, and responding to outages or quality issues in the water systems. Maintenance tasks include flushing, chemical disinfecting of process equipment, and other minor and preventative maintenance on equipment such as filter replacement and UV bulb replacement. You will utilize Maximo to track time and parts for billing purposes and complete vulnerability assessments. Additionally, you'll use Microsoft products (Excel, Word) to ensure compliance and document testing and services for local, county, state, and federal requirements

This role primarily operates during day shifts, with occasional requirements for nights, weekends, and holidays due to on-call duties or planned/emergency outages

What You'll Bring

  • This role requires a High School Diploma or GEDequivalent
  • Licensed or ability to be licensed as a Grade I or higher Water Treatment or Distribution Operator
  • Experience or education in laboratory procedures, mathematics, chemistry, biology, microbiology, human health, computers, instrumentation, and safety programs relevant to water treatment operations
  • Familiarity with Iowa Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations for water treatment systems

Additional Details

  • This role requires daily attendance at a worksite
  • Must possess a valid state issued driver's license and clean driving record, employee operates company vehicles daily
  • Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
  • Ability to work safely in or with high noise levels, extreme heat, dust, high places, exhaust from purge pumps, chemicals and their fumes (sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, chlorine), fiber glass insulation, asbestos, welding hazards, cutting tools (power saws, grinders, drills, etc.), high pressure steam, hot condensate, high pressure distribution loop, and high speed rotating equipment
  • Must be physically capable of hearing and understanding audible alarms, detecting changes in noise levels, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Physically capable of entering and working in confined spaces and wearing PPE, including half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, and safety shoes Ability to hear warning alarms
  • Capable of performing various physical tasks, including standing, walking, climbing ladders, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have corrected eyesight at 20/40 to accurately read instruments, gauges, and manuals
  • Ability to read gages, charts, computer monitors, operations manuals, and colorimetric test results
  • Ability to operate forklifts, trucks, and other motor vehicles
  • The position consists of 75% work indoors and 25% work outdoors travel between locations (building to building) may expose the employee to weather conditions

Compensation

Salary Range: $22.36 - $32.73 USD hourly

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan and emergency or on-call pay.
