LGBT Workplace Discrimination Order Goes into Effect

On April 8, President Obama’s LGBT Workplace Discrimination Executive Order became effective. Signed by the President on July 21, 2014, the executive order bans federal contractors and subcontractors from discriminating against applicants or employees on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation. Making History: A DOL Fast Fact

As the first Secretary of Labor for the Department of Labor (DOL), Scottish native William B. Wilson had quite an impressive career background. After working in the Pennsylvania coal mines at the age of 9, he became the secretary of his local union by age 14. Later, he helped found the United Mine Workers and became a U.S. Representative for the state of Pennsylvania. His chief initiatives included advocating for eight-hour workdays, and labor rights for women and minorities. Wilson also led the nation’s defense production efforts during World War I.
