Network Yourself Into A New Company

I was recently asked about the best way to be considered for a position with a company which is not currently advertising. The answer:

Research, research, research...

Find out what you can on the internet through the company website and/or twitter and facebook. Many companies are using social networking to manage their image, disseminate information, and/or recruit. Even if they are not, others may be talking about them! Use the search features of these social networking sites to find out what they or others are saying about the company. You might even be able to develop a rapport with someone at the company who may be willing to assist you.

If you can, tap into someone who currently works for the company and who might be able to help you.Try an internet search for the company name and add the word group or meeting to the company name to identify any groups company representatives may attend. For example, the company might be active in Chamber of Commerce meetings or professional organizations. Ask pertinent questions that will help you both present your skills in a meaningful way and do so to the right person. Network yourself into a position to be able to make a positive impression.

Begin thinking about how you would approach a hiring manager or Human Resources. Researching the company and the culture will give you clues about which of your assets to highlight. It may also hint at how to initiate the contact – through email, mail, phone? Is an in person visit (resume in hand) possible? Which would be best received?

In the end, though, your enthusiasm for the company may carry you forward as long as you can present it in a cogent light that causes the employer to notice you as a good match!
