How to Tell When It’s Time to Quit Your Job
Share
There was a time when you loved getting up every morning to go to work. Somewhere along the road however, something changed. Now, your dream job is more like a nightmare. How can you tell if you’re going through a rough patch or if it’s time to pull up stakes and leave? There are several things you should take into account when deciding if you should quit your job. Consider these factors before choosing to walk out the door.

You’re Not Passionate

When you wake up in the morning, you should feel excited to go to work and look forward to your day. If not, that’s a big red flag. Perhaps when you first started, you were fully invested and interested in your job. If that feeling has changed, you’ll find yourself slipping into a grind and not tapping your true potential. If you wake up miserable, consider it a sign from the universe to move on.

Work Performance

If you’re not interested in what you are doing, it will be obvious to your colleagues and upper management. A lack of passion will lead to subpar work and poor reviews. If you have the ability, but are not able to deliver results, it may be time to call it quits. Oftentimes, work will suffer if you are bored in your job and feel you are not growing. This is a sign that you’ve stagnated and need to advance outside of the company.

You Don’t Get Along

Simply put, you don’t fit in. If you’re having issues with higher-ups and co-workers, that’s a major sign the job is not right for you. You can certainly try to improve your relationship with your boss and others, but sometimes that may not be possible. If your issue is with the company itself, that’s also a sign to move on.

Perhaps you have ethical or moral objections to your company’s work or there are cultural differences that make for an uncomfortable workplace. If that’s the case, you may always be a square peg there and should consider a job that’s a better fit.

Your Life is Off Balance

Do you feel like your job is taking over your personal life? Are you spending more time working or worrying about your job than you are spending time with your family? Maybe your job designing custom car covers is taking over your weekends and is causing stress at home. That’s a sign that you should explore other opportunities that may be more family friendly. You may even consider advancing out on your own and setting your own hours.

Low Salary

If your job responsibilities have increased to the point where you feel you’re working two jobs, but your salary does not reflect that, you will likely end up feeling resentful and burned out. Is downsizing to blame? If so, it may be a good time to jump ship.

It could be a sign that your company is having financial difficulties. If that’s not the case, then you are likely being taken advantage of. Try talking to your boss, but if nothing changes, it may be a sign that it’s time to go.

Deciding to leave a job may not be easy, but these factors should help make it clear when it’s in your best interest to do so. Life’s too short to stay in a job that’s the wrong match for you. Invest your time into looking for a better opportunity rather than stagnating in a position that’s holding you back.
